Lake Superior State's men's and women's swimming and diving programs had a record year... in a weekend.
15 new program records were set by the Lakers in the season-opening meet at Northern MIchigan University in Marquette, Michigan. You could even call it 16, because that statistic alone is a program-best mark. Lake Superior State Director of Intercollegiate Swimming and Aquatics Tim O'Neill was ecsastic after the meet's conclusion.
"Fifteen school records is something to celebrate," he said. "We have a great foundation to build off of as we develop throughout the year."
Andrea Ayuso Mendez posted the best times in LSSU history in the 100 yard butterfly, 200 yard butterfly, 200 yard IM, and 400 yard IM races. The Lakers competed on Friday and Saturday at the PEIF Pool.
On the men's side,
Fedor Mironov set program records in the 400 yard IM, 200 yard butterfly and 1,000 yard freestyle. His finish in the 200 yard butterfly particularly caught the eye - he finished just four seconds off the leader in sixth position. It was a larger gap between him and the eighth place finisher in that race.
Dimitrij Mijailovic posted the best time in Laker history in the 200 yard breaststroke on Saturday, a day after Gabrielle Woodard set the best women's time in the same event.
Hudson VanOstenberg earned LSSU's best men's time in the 200 yard backstroke.
Ivy Delo now holds the best time in women's history in the 100 yard backstroke.
The Lakers also set team records in the 200 and 400 yard men's medley relay, plus the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays.
O'Neill was thrilled with the efforts of both Laker teams on the weekend. He said, "I am proud out how the team is handling adversity this early in the season. New expectations are never easy and we are learning to adapt to them."
The Lakers head to Davenport University on Friday and Saturday for their next competition.Â
