Box Score 2 Evan Murr scored twice on Friday and assisted three Saturday night goals as Minnesota State took two wins from Lake Superior State at Taffy Abel Arena this weekend.
Friday night, the Lakers (3-8-1, 0-6-0 CCHA) forced overtime on a third period goal by
Sasha Teleguine, equalizing Murr's first period strike. For the third week in a row, the Lakers forced a result with a third period comeback, and the co-captain's strike earned a CCHA league point. But Murr tallied in overtime as the Mavericks (6-2-4, 3-1-2 CCHA) won 2-1.
Sophomore goaltender
Rorke Applebee starred for the Lakers, stopping 39 shots. He and his opposite, MSU's Alex Tracy, dazzled in the first period. Applebee made 16 saves and Tracy stopped 20 in a back-and-forth, frantically paced frame. Hard-hitting, intense hockey thrilled the fans at Abel Arena. Murr's first of the night, in the middle of the second period, put the Mavs in the lead before Teleguine's tying goal.
While the Lakers dropped a 4-2 result on Saturday, there was plenty to like from the home team. It was another hard-hitting, skilled game between two teams that have played several excellent games in recent years. The Lakers penalty kill kept the Mavericks off the board on all four opportunities, then blanked Minnesota State's man advantage in thee Saturday chances, too. LSSU went a perfect 7-for-7 on the PK for the weekend, a remarkable turnaround for the unit.
Lakers head coach
Damon Whitten told 99.5 YES FM postgame Saturday, "We've talked enough about [the penalty kill] costing us games. Now it's not costing us games, it's giving us a chance to win games. I think the guys deserve a lot of credit. [Friday] we talked about
Rorke Applebee doing a good job on the penalty kill as your goaltender. Tonight, its
Andrew Oke making some big and timely saves. Really good details by our guys. Up ice, especially last night, I thought we were really good."
The two teams matched each other for pace again, with Oke making 27 stops for the Lakers and Tracy stopping 28 pucks for the Mavericks.
Calem Mangone scored the game's opener, his fifth of the year, to put Lake Superior State up 1-0 at 8:31 of the first.
William Ahlrik and
Adam Barone assisted the goal, with each picking up their ninth assists of the year. Ahlrik added his tenth assist of the year late in the game on a goal by
Luke Levandowski. But Luigi Benincasa leveled the score at 1-1 just over a minute after Mangone's goal, and the Mavs struck twice in 16 seconds during the second period.
Murr assisted every goal but Fin Williams' empty netter in the third period. He scored or assisted five of the Mavericks' six goals on the weekend.
But the Lakers tangled with one of the top teams in the CCHA and showed their head coach that they're on the right track.
"One thing we learned this weekend is that were better today than we were seven days ago, or even five days ago. It doesn't feel good, and you're not happy with the results, but we weren't far off tonight. We liked some moments of our game. But 16 seconds. You've got to be able to respond to that adversity."
The Lakers hit the road to play Ferris State next weekend, before returning to Taffy Abel Arena to play Augustana on November 28th.
