PREVIW: Laker Hockey Set to Host Minnesota State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) Lakers (11-17-2, 9-12-1 CCHA) are set to close out their regular season home schedule when they host the #15 Minnesota State Mavericks (20-8-2, 15-5-2 CCHA) for a weekend series in Taffy Abel Arena.

Stories to watch:
  • The Mavericks can clinch the MacNaughton Cup with any combination of five points gained or five points lost by BGSU AND three points gained or three points lost by Michigan Tech.
  • The Mavericks were able to come away with a pair of hard-fought victories over the Lakers in Mankato earlier this season, taking the Friday contest by a margin of 2-1 before defeating the Lakers 3-2 in overtime the following night in a game that LSSU had believed they had won prior to Branden Piku's would-be game winner being overturned due to goaltender interference.
  • Minnesota State boasts one of the league's top point producers in Rhett Pitlick who is tied for the lead with 32 tallies on the season.
  • The Lakers will also be facing projected starting goaltender and Richter Award Semifinalist Alex Tracy who enters the weekend with a league-leading 1.53 goals against average to pair with a save percentage of .491.
  • This weekend marks a matchup between two of the league's top offenses with MNSU averaging 2.77 goals per game while LSSU is close behind at 2.73. However, the Mavericks also hold the league's top defense at 1.60 goals allowed and their 48 total goals allowed on the season is the top mark nationally.
  • The Lakers will also be honoring their seniors this weekend with the Senior Day ceremony taking place prior to puck drop on Saturday.
  • Connor Milburn enters the weekend leading the team in points with 22 while Timo Bakos (19), Sasha Teleguine (19), Nate Schweitzer (18), Dawson Tritt (16), John Herrington (15), Evan Bushy (14),  Reagan Milburn (12), Luke Levandowski (10), and William Ahlrik (10) have also notched double-digit points so far this season.
  • Teleguine is currently having a break out season in scoring as he ranks second in the CCHA for goal scoring with 14, including a 4-goal weekend against Bemidji State.
  • Schweitzer enters the weekend leading the team in assists with 15.
  • 22 different Lakers have recorded at least one point so far this season while 14 Lakers have scored at least one goal.
