SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's tennis team (1-0) opened the 2025 Spring season with a 6-1 victory at Lawrence Tech after sweeping singles play on Saturday.
Lawrence Tech managed to steal away an early 1-0 lead in the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, but the Lakers continued to fight as Jordi Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat, Spain) and Driss Sedrati (Casablanca, Morocco) grinded out a 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles to give their team momentum going into singles.
Fraile Raton and Sedrati carried over their energy into their singles matches, earning respective scores of 6-3, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-2 in the second and third matches of the lineup. Stefan Andrei was then able to close out a 6-4, 7-6 decision at the top of the order after grinding out a 7-5 tiebreaker to decide the second set, extending the team lead to 3-1 and pushing the Blue Devils to the brink.
Raul Velasco Garcia (Barcelona, Spain) and Maxence Hamon (Montreal, Que.) would then push the Lakers over the edge with respective wins of 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-1, and Lezan Koyuncu (Cologne, Germany) closed out a sweep of all six singles matches after closing out a third set super-tiebreaker by a margin of 10-6.
The Lakers return to action on Friday, Feb. 7 when they travel to face Northwood with the first serve scheduled for 11 a.m.
