PREVIEW: Laker Hockey Looking to Retain Cappo Cup

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State Lakers (9-15-2, 7-10-1 CCHA) will be looking to retain the Cappo Cup for the second year in a row when they host the Northern Michigan Wildcats (4-23-1, 3-16-1 CCHA) for a two-game series this weekend.

Stories to watch:
  • The Lakers hold a two-game edge in the series after sweeping NMU in Marquette earlier this season with a +9 goal differential.
  • The Wildcats hold an 18-12 edge in the Cappo Cup series since the trophy was first introduced in 1994, but LSSU has won the series in four of the last five seasons.
  • The Cappo Cup is awarded to the winner of the regular season series with ties being broken by goal differential. If there is still a tie, the trophy will be retained by the winner from the previous season.
  • Last season, the Wildcats swept LSSU in Marquette, despite four goals from Jared Westcott over the two games, but the Lakers returned the favor in the Soo with wins of 5-1 and 5-2 to win the cup on goal differential.
  • In November, the Lakers took care of business in Marquette with wins of 5-0 and 5-1, including the second-career shutout for Rorke Applebee. The Lakers can clinch the trophy with a win on either night this weekend.
  • NMU has bounced back in 2025, winning three of their first four games of the new year, but they are currently riding a four-game skid over the past two weeks.
  • The Lakers boast one of the top scorers in the CCHA this season in Sasha Teleguine (13-4-17) alongside one of the league's top special teams units. LSSU has scored the second most power play goals (21) while also holding the third-best penalty kill percentage at 81.8%.
  • Connor Milburn and Timo Bakos enter the weekend leading the team in points with 18 each while Teleguine (17), Nate Schweitzer (16), John Herrington (14), Dawson Tritt (14), Evan Bushy (12), and Reagan Milburn (10) have also notched double-digit points so far this season.
  • Teleguine is currently having a break out season as he ranks third in the CCHA for goal scoring with 13, including a 4-goal weekend against Bemidji State.
  • Schweitzer enters the weekend leading the team in assists with 13.
  • 22 different Lakers have recorded at least one point so far this season while 14 Lakers have scored at least one goal.
