Laker Men's Basketball Topple Wayne State After Perkins' Game Winner

DETROIT, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) Lakers (25-5, 16-4 GLIAC) earned a 79-77 victory in overtime against the Wayne State Warriors (15-13, 11-9 GLIAC) on Saturday.

The Warriors jumped out to an early 10-2 advantage, but a pair of threes from Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.) helped to settle his team and trim the lead back down to three. Wayne State would pull ahead again, leading by as many as 17 points in the opening half, but the Lakers kept fighting, grinding their way back into the game and closing out the half with an 8-2 run, trailing only 43-38 at the break.

The Lakers wasted no time tying up the score in the second half with a three from Andy Soma (Traverse City, Mich.) and a bucket inside from Womack. Both teams would then trade baskets, but the Lakers would secure their first lead of the game after a pair of baskets from Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) ignited a 14-2 run that was capped off with a three from Adam Harakow (Edmonton, Alta.). Both teams continued to battle, exchanging the lead several times throughout the final minutes of regulation, but down a point with less than 30 seconds left, Perkins drilled a three to put his team up by two. However, Wayne State's Rob Lee Jr. was able to tie up the score with seconds to play to send the game to overtime.

Both teams would go blow for blow with one another for three-straight possessions in the overtime period, but the Lakers were able to get the defensive stop they needed to give themselves a chance with the final shot of a tie game. After getting the ball on the block and clearing everyone else out, Perkins went to work and threw up a shot that put his team ahead with one second remaining, and it would ultimately prove to be the game-winner as the Warriors' prayer of a half court heave missed high.

Womack led all scorers with 26 points on the day while Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) had 17 points of his own. Perkins recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double while also snatching a pair of steals and blocks as well. Meanwhile, Harakow also finished in double figures with 10 points.

The Lakers will now turn their attention to the GLIAC tournament when they host the seventh-seeded Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside on Wednesday, March, 5 with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
