SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (12-22-2) fell to the top-seeded Mavericks of Minnesota State (25-8-3) by a narrow margin of 3-2 in game two of the Mason Cup Quarterfinals on Saturday.
The Lakers were able to strike early as
Blake Humphrey (Rochester, N.Y.) notched his second goal of the season just under three minutes into the game with some help from
Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.), but just over a minute later, Luc Wilson knotted up the score at 1-1 which would remain until the end of the opening period.
The Lakers would once again claim the lead after
Jordan Venegoni (Livonia, Mich.) and
John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) set up their captain,
Grant Hindman (Oakland, Mich.), for the score in the opening minutes of the second period. However, the Mavericks wasted no time tying the score up again with a goal by Zach Krajnik 15 seconds after the ensuing puck drop. Evan Murr would tack on one more for Minnesota State a few minutes later to give them their first lead of the night, and despite a strong Laker attack to try and find the equalizer, neither side was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the game as the Mavericks held on to secure a spot in the semifinals.
