Lake Superior State's volleyball team squared off with Minnesota State (6-0) on Friday morning at the Mankato Invitational. The hosting Mavericks won in straight sets, 25-12, 25-13, 25-9.
Much like Thursday night's clash with #22 Northern State, the Lakers (0-2) started well in the opening set. They took a 6-4 lead on a
Valeriya Varnakova kill. She hit a solid .214 for the match, and performed well defensively with five digs.
Morgan Deming hit .333 with four kills on nine hits for LSSU. She also registered a solo block and a block assist. She figures to be one of the best middles in the GLIAC when conference play opens in October.
Jenna DeRosia had five digs for the Lakers in the second set. The freshman from Bay City, MI looked comfortable in her second collegiate match. So did fellow first-year player
Elisa Rizzoli. She scored three kills for Lake State, including the first Laker point of the match. She hit .333 for the match, after scoring a kill on four hits against NSU Thursday.
The Lakers were solid at the net, scoring three blocks and equaling Minnesota State's total.
Play continues Saturday at the Mankato Tournament. The Lakers play a doubleheader, facing Minnesota-Crookston at 9:00 AM EST before taking on Quincy at 5:00 PM EST. Keep tabs on the action via live stats on LSSULakers.com
