Box Score The first week of GLIAC volleyball league play wrapped up Saturday afternoon, as Lake Superior State traveled south to face Wayne State in Detroit.
The Lakers (0-6, 0-2 GLIAC) dropped the match in straight sets, 25-14, 25-19, 25-12. Wayne State (8-1, 2-0 GLIAC) attacked well, despite a seven-block showing by LSSU.
Rachel Steele tallied two solo blocks, while
Elisa Rizzoli and
Morgan Deming had four block assists each. The Lakers played very well at the net, outblocking the Warriors 7-4 for the match.
Rizzoli continues to impress early in her Laker career. She scored four kills on 15 swings with no attacking errors, and excelled defensively with 10 digs and the four block assists. She's shown high-level ability that's dominated several stretches in her young career. Rizzoli's 17 kills on 32 hits with no errors against Minnesota-Crookston made for an eye-popping stat line.
Senior setter
Vanessa Swerdon had another tremendous showing, with 12 assists and no statistical errors for the second straight match. She also kept a clean scoresheet on Friday against Grand Valley State.
The Warriors took sizable early leads in the first and third sets, but the Lakers continued to show their scrappy determination. LSSU took an early lead in the middle session and the set stayed close throughout. Down late in the set,
Gia Waters scored twice on a kill and a service ace to keep the Lakers in striking distance, before the Warriors closed out the frame.
The Lakers continue their travels next weekend with a trip to Saginaw Valley State on Thursday, followed by a Saturday match at Purdue Northwest. Then they'll host Michigan Tech on Friday, October 3
rd in the Lakers' home opener. That's followed by a showdown with their other Upper Peninsula nemesis, Northern Michigan on Saturday, October 4
