Karter Richards lifted Lake Superior State to a 59-52 victory over Roosevelt on Saturday afternoon in GLIAC play at the Goodman Center in Chicago, IL.
The redshirt freshman shot LSSU (8-7, 2-4 GLIAC) into the lead with a pair of jumpers from the paint and a three-pointer near the end of the first half. The Lakers took a 26-22 lead into the break, and Richards continued to make quality plays in the second half. He finished with a 5-of-8 shooting line, hitting both of his three-point shots during the game. He also came up clutch late, hitting all four of his free throws to preserve the lead.
Neither team shot well from the floor, but LSSU beat Roosevelt (1-12, 0-6 GLIAC) by controlling the interior. LSSU outrebounded the opposition 40-36, grabbing nine offensive boards to Roosevelt's four. Lake Superor State sank 13 of 14 free throws and scored 22 points in the paint. The inside game made a massive difference in the game.
Tyler Jamison grabbed four of the Lakers' nine offensive rebounds and chipped in seven points with two assists and a pair of steals.
Peter Nwoke snatched nine rebounds for LSSU as well.
Nino Carter-Smith played a well-balanced game for Lake Superior State, hitting both of his three-point attempts while taking good care of the basketball. His assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.16 is second in the GLIAC and 69th among all players in NCAA Division II men's college basketball. As a team, the Lakers only turned the ball over nine times, while forcing 14 by their opponent. At +4.7 per game, the Lakers have the 17th best turnover margin per game in the country.
Led by Richards, LSSU's bench outscored Roosevelt's 27-8.
LSSU returns home for a Thursday showdown with U.P. rival Northern Michigan in a GLIAC doubleheader. The Women's Basketball game begins at 5:30 PM, while the Men's Basketball game follows immediately after. Saturday, the Lakers host Michigan Tech at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
