Box Score Markus Loponen scored his first collegiate goal for Lake Superior State on Friday night in Anchorage, AK, striking at 1:36 of the second period.
Adam Belusko scored at 7:50 of the same frame, but the Lakers lost the game 5-2 to Alaska Anchorage.
Loponen's goal put the Lakers (1-2-0, 0-0-0 CCHA) on the board after the Seawolves (1-4) scored three in the back half of the first period. He banged in a rebound off of a quality drive by
Charles Savoie, who wrapped around the goal and dumped the puck to the low slot.
Raoul Boilard grabbed the puck in an open position and fired it toward the net. Seawolves goalie Joey Rocha kicked the puck back into the low slot, where Loponen quickly snatched it up and flung it into the cage. The goal cut UAA's lead to 3-1.
Though the Seawolves grabbed a power play goal through Jacob Terpstra, the Lakers punched back with Belusko's mid-second period goal.
Calem Mangone drove up the right wing and played a layoff pass ahead to Savoie. Trailing backward toward the right corner while protecting the puck, he zipped a pass to Belusko, who had made a late backdoor run toward the goal. The first year forward drove to the net with his stick on the ice and good things happened. He jabbed at the puck and sent it in to halve the Laker deficit to 4-2.
The Seawolves scored the only goal of the third period, though the Lakers outshot them heavily. LSSU tallied 17 shots, seven on target, while the Seawolves attempted six and put three on net.
Anders Miller, an Anchorage native, made 15 saves for Lake State.
The two teams tangle again on Saturday night, with opening faceoff at 7:00 PM. The Lakers then head home to host Bowling Green on Great Lake State Week at newly renovated Taffy Abel Arena. Buy your tickets online, and download the Lake Superior State Lakers mobile app, now available on theÂ
