Lake Superior State can hit the three. No surprises there, as
Steve Hettinga's teams have always excelled from deep.
But this year's Laker squad puts up three-point numbers that flat-out make your jaw drop. Half of their makes from the field were threes in an 82-71 win over GLIAC rival Ferris State on Monday night.
14 of 28 field goal makes by LSSU (14-11, 8-8 GLIAC) came from behind the long line. While Ferris State scored 40 points in the paint, the Bulldogs (10-13, 7-9 GLIAC) couldn't keep up with the Lakers three-point rampage.
Omar Suleiman scored 24 points, shooting 4-of-9 from downtown.
Drew Hess shot 6-for-11 from three, at a 54.5% clip for the game. His second half wowed the crowd at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium as he hit five triples.
The Lakers took an 11-point lead into the locker room. But Ferris quickly took its own lead on a 13-0 run out of the locker room. But that was it for the Bulldogs. Once the Lakers got their second half shooting dialed in, they retook the lead and held it for good.
And it wasn't just the shooting. LSSU forced 22 turnovers and recorded 11 steals, with
Nino Carter-Smith plundering the ball five times. He also set a new career high with 10 assists in the game.
The Bulldogs threw several different defensive looks at the Lakers, utilizing a few different zone looks. But Lake State shot the opposition out of those looks, hitting 9-of-16 threes in after halftime. In fact, the Lakers only hit three field goals inside the perimeter in the final 20 minutes.
The second half bombardment powered LSSU to its third straight victory, after a nine-point win over Saginaw Valley State on Thursday and a three-point win at Northern Michigan the prior weekend.
Karter Richards scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting for LSSU.
Harrison Sorrelle had 10 points with five rebounds.
Mykel Bingham scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Ferris State on 7-of-11 shooting. He blocked three shots in a very good performance in a rivalry game.
The Lakers and Bulldogs often meet in front of great crowds. Monday Night Basketball proved no different as the Bud Cooper Gym drew a healthy attendance.
The Lakers now prepare for Alumni Weekend and Senior Day. They'll clash with Davenport on Thursday night, then host Grand Valley State on Saturday for Senior Day. Buy your tickets online or at the Norris Center box office.
