Coach Gregg Schaffer is excited to join Lake Superior State’s men's basketball program as a volunteer assistant coach after retiring as St. Joseph’s boys basketball coach in the spring of 2024.

Coach Schaffer enjoyed a 27 year career as a boys varsity coach, while leading Otsego’s program for 8 years and St. Joseph’s for 19 years. While at Otsego, the Bulldogs won 76 games and 2 District Titles. Coach Schaffer led St. Joseph’s Bears to 4 District Titles and 1 West Division Title in the rugged SMAC Conference. Coach Schaffer’s career varsity coaching record is 298-294, while retiring from St. Joseph as the school’s winningest boys basketball coach with a record of 222-196.

Coach Schaffer also brings college coaching experience to his duties at Lake Superior State by assisting legendary coach, Dick Shilts, for 2 years at Kalamazoo Valley Community College and his brother, Doug Schaffer, at Lake Michigan College for 4 years. Coach Schaffer helped KVCC reach the National Tournament in 2011 and LMC reach the same National Tournament in 2014.

Coach Schaffer and Coach Hettinga both played for BCAM Hall of Fame Coach, and Gregg’s late father, Jerry Schaffer at River Valley High School, with Gregg’s 1979 team winning the Class C State Championship and Steve’s 1988 team advancing to the final 4. Both Gregg and Steve continued their playing careers for BCAM Hall of Fame Coach, Dick Shilts, at KVCC.

Coach Schaffer is very excited to reunite with Coach Hettinga at Lake Superior State to help his successful men’s basketball program pursue excellence on and off the court.
