Redshirt Senior (2016-17): Made 26 appearances, playing 12.7 minutes per game in a tandem role with Michael Nicholson, providing the Lakers with an excellent 1-2 combo at center. Smutny averaged 6.4 points per game while shooting 58.7% from the field. He also stretched the floor well, shooting 51% from deep (23-for-45). The big forward also attacked the rim, drawing 43 free throws and hitting 84% of them.

Redshirt Junior (2015-16): Played in 28 games, averaging 11 minutes per game in a key reserve role backing up Michael Nicholson.

Redshirt Sophomore (2014-15): Appeared in 33 games as a reserve center... Averaged 16.6 minutes, 5.4 points and 2.2 rebounds per game... Averaged 13.1 points and 5.2 per 40 minutes of playing time... Reached double-digits in five games, including a 71-55 victory over Northern Michigan (2/19) where he reached a career-high 15 points on 4-5 shooting from behind the arc and 5-6 shooting on the floor... Also collected a season-high five rebounds on five different occasions.

Redshirt Freshman (2013-14): Appeared in 26 games as a reserve center...Reached season highs of seven points and seven rebounds during a 92-55 victory over Silver Lake College (11/19)...Finished the season as the team’s highest-ranked student academically with a 3.74 grade point average in mechanical engineering.

Freshman (2012-13): 

Prep: Averaged 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists per game for Saline High School in 2011-12...Was named to the All-Southeastern Conference Red First Team and Washtenaw County Dream Team in 2012...Also earned All-SEC honors in 2011 and received the SEC sportsmanship award in 2010...Was an all-conference high jumper...Received the Russ Michilke & Neil Steil Award for being the school’s most-committed, influential and best overall athlete.
