Biography

Matt Bruneteau is a member of one of the sport's most historic families. After graduating LSSU with a degree in Exercise Science and minors in Psychology and Coaching, he played two full professional seasons. After finishing the 2013-14 season in the ECHL, Bruneteau competed in France's Ligue Magnus for Strasbourg for two seasons. He then went into coaching, with multiple stints at NCAA Division III Stevenson University. He was also an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Alaska Anchorage. Bruneteau also coached for three seasons in the USHL before returning to Stevenson in 2025-26.

Matt is the grandson of Ed Bruneteau, who played hockey professionally for nearly 20 years, including seven seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Matt's uncle, Modere "Mud" Bruneteau, famously ended the longest game in NHL history in 1936. A Red Wings rookie who had been with the team for two weeks, on March 24, 1936 Mud scored the winning goal at 16:30 of the sixth overtime, at 176:30 total minutes played, to lift Detroit over the Montreal Maroons at the Montreal Forum. Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series - which the team swept to claim the Stanley Cup. He also won the Cup in 1937 and 1943.

Senior (2013-14): Captained Lake Superior State, scoring a goal with three assists and posting a +2 rating. His lone goal of the season was the second of the game - and the game-winner - on opening night against Robert Morris, a 3-1 Laker victory. Dan Radke and Alex Globke assisted.

Junior (2012-13): Named an Assistant Captain for LSSU. His first goal as a Laker was the game-winning goal during a 3-1 victory over Northern Michigan (12/15)... Also tallied the game-winning goal during a 4-2 victory over Alaska (2/15)... Was named Central Collegiate Hockey Association Defenseman of the Week following the Feb. 15-16 Alaska series... Led the Lakers in blocked shots with 98... Received the 2013 Jim Howie Unsung Hero Award.

Sophomore (2011-12): Led the Lakers in blocked shots with 89, forming an impressive shot-blocking tandem when paired with Andrew Perrault... Blocked 14 shots during a 4-3 victory over Miami (1/14)... Played against his brothers, Brett and Nick, during the Catamount Cup... Received the 2012 Jim Howie Unsung Hero Award.

Freshman (2010-11): Appeared in 31 of 39 games... Recorded his first collegiate point assisting on Rick Schofield’s game-winning goal during a 3-1 victory over Northern Michigan (11/6)... Notched three of his five points during a five-game stretch from Dec. 4 through Jan.15... Totaled 50 blocked shots.

Prior to LSSU: Was the first Nebraska native to play for the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League, captaining the team in 2009-10... Contributed two goals and four assists while serving as the Stars’ captain in 2009-10... Also played four seasons with Shattuck-St. Mary’s... Captained the Wenatchee Wild in the NAHL in 2008-09.

Personal: Son of Rick and Mitzi Bruneteau... A 2008 Shattuck St. Mary's graduate...
