Liam Cound returned to Lake Superior State as Head Sports Performance Coach in the summer of 2025 after a year at UMass-Lowell. With a specialty in hockey training, Liam was a key member of the Lakers staff in 2023/24. When the chance for him to return to Sault Ste. Marie opened, he jumped at the opportunity.

"Sault Ste. Marie, Lake Superior State University and the staff here are special to me. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to experience some different things, but ultimately, I've always felt that Lake State is the right place for my family and myself. It's good to come back home."

Cound's previous experience includes time at the University of Iowa. He interned with the Hawkeyes' Olympic sports programs. He also served as a Graduate Assistant at Harding University, where he had oversight of the physical development for baseball, volleyball, women's golf, and men's and women's tennis athletes.

While pursuing his undergraduate degree at Iowa, Liam played for the Hawkeyes ACHA Division II Hockey team. His background as a hockey player at the collegiate level developed his understanding and passion for the physical training components of the game.

"As a young kid, I fell in love with the game and knew that I wanted to stay around the game," said Liam. "I learned so much about the dedication and details that go into high level sports performance from my time at Iowa and Harding. Now, back here at LSSU, with a great team, great staff that I am very comfortable with, I'm ready to help our athletes achieve their goals."

Cound graduated from the University of Iowa in 2022 with a Bachelor's of Exercise Science. He received a master’s degree in strength and conditioning from Harding University in 2023. He lives in Sault Ste. Marie with his wife, Devon, their two dogs and cat.
