Lakers' comeback effort against Lewis falls short

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team battled back from a 15-point defict before falling 78-76 to Lewis during Friday's opening round of the GLIAC v. GLVC Challenge.

The Lakers (0-1) trailed 45-32 at halftime and were down 57-42 with 13:15 remaining in the second half.

It was 66-52 when Scott Perkins made one free throw at 8:49 and added two more at 7:59 to spark a 7-0 run. LSSU followed that with an 11-2 run that included four points each by Ryan Kuhl and Mike Rader. Perkins polished it off with a steal and a layup for a 74-73 LSSU lead with 2:27 remaining.

Lewis (1-0) went ahead 77-75 on two free throws by Dustin Warfield with 34 seconds remaining. After Rader missed a go-ahead attempt with nine seconds to go, the Flyers' Jason Genova sank two more foul shots with five seconds left.

Genova led all scorers with 20 points.

Perkins led LSSU with 18 points and four assists. Kuhl followed with 14 points, and Mark Morse totaled 11 points and five assists.

LSSU shot 50.9 percent from the field, but was 8-of-23 from three-point range. The Lakers made 10-of-14 free throws.

Lewis shot 50.8 percent from the field, including 6-of-20 from three-point range. The Flyers made 12-of-19 free throws and out-rebounded LSSU, 34-31.

LSSU plays host Wisconsin-Parkside at 7:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.
