DETROIT - Wayne State battled back from an 11-point deficit to beat the Lake Superior State women's basketball team 68-65 Saturday in Detroit.
Junior center Alyssa VanderWal highlighted LSSU's effort by scoring a career-high 18 points and adding 10 rebounds for her first career double double. She was 7-for-8 from the field and 4-for-6 at the free-throw line.
WSU (6-7 overall, 2-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) trailed 45-34 with 17:10 remaining and was down 51-42 with 10:10 to go. The Warriors outscored LSSU 13-4 to tie the game, 55-55, at the 5:59 mark. They claimed their first lead, 60-57, when Chastidy Miller converted a three-point play at 4:39 and led the rest of the way.
Miller led WSU with 18 points and eight rebounds, and Chelsea Kouri came off the bench to score 13 points.
Emily Joseph and Jaclyn Armstrong scored 12 points each for LSSU (6-11 overall, 2-7 GLIAC). Shalyn Beauchamp had five points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.
LSSU shot 50 percent from the field, including 4-of-13 from three-point range, and made 13-of-17 free throws. The Lakers dominated the boards, 41-26, but committed 28 turnovers to WSU's 13.
Wayne State scored 15 points off Laker turnovers and shot 40.9 percent from the field. The Warriors were 6-of-18 from three-point range and made 8-of-10 free throws.
LSSU travels to Findlay on Jan. 19.
