SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State came from
behind to tie 1-1 during regulation and suffered shootout loss
during the opening game of its Central Collegiate Hockey
Association series against Northern Michigan Friday at Taffy Abel
Arena.
NMU (3-10-2 overall, 2-9-2-1 CCHA) snapped a three-game
losing streak by winning the shootout, 2-1. LSSU (4-6-5 overall,
3-4-4-1 CCHA), which endured the same fate last Saturday at
Alaska, extended its winless streak to four games and fell to
1-3 in shootouts against league opponents.
The Wildcats and Lakers play Game 2 of the four-game Cappo Cup
total-goals series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.
NMU's Gregor Hanson deflected Derek May's shot from the point to
score the Wildcats' regulation goal at 8:54 of the first period.
NMU made it difficult for LSSU to clear the puck out of its zone
and out-shot the Lakers 16-9 in the second period,
but failed to score.
LSSU points leader Zac MacVoy tallied his seventh goal of the
season on a wrap-around shot at 10:11 of the third period. He set
up the play by digging the puck out of the corner after Rick
Schofield won the faceoff. MacVoy found Simon Gysbers at the
point, and Gysbers drew the only assist.
MacVoy also scored the Lakers' lone shootout goal. Steven
Kaunisto and Rick Schofield had the other attempts for
LSSU.
Laker goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson stopped Mark Olver's
shootout attempt, but Hanson and Erik Gustafsson both scored to
secure two points in the CCHA standings for the Wildcats.
Mahoney-Wilson finished with 30 saves, while NMU netminder Devan
Hartigan had 29.
Lake Superior State and Northern Michigan were both 0-for-4 on
the power play.
