Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - A Grand Valley State women's basketball team
that has not lost since Dec. 1 shut down Lake Superior State in the
second half Saturday and extended its win streak to seven games
with an 80-68 victory.
GVSU (10-2 overall, 6-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference) overcame a nine-point halftime deficit by holding LSSU
to 10 second-half field goals. Lake Superior State (10-6 overall,
3-5 GLIAC) was 10-for-33 from the field during the final 20 minutes
after shooting 68 percent during the first half and building a
39-30 lead.
Grand Valley State's Emma Veach was a difference maker, scoring
23 second-half points and leading the game with 25. Veach
accomplished that as LSSU held GVSU's first-half leader, Jasmine
Padin, was held to three second-half points after she scoring
10 during the first half.
LSSU's Ronlea Peterson made three free throws with 3:15
remaining to trim GVSU's lead to 69-66. Veach answered with a
jumper, and Padin came away with a steal that led to two free
throws by Elizabeth Van Tiflin for a 73-66 Grand Valley advantage.
Veach made six free throws during the final 1:49 to close out the
game.
Four players scored in double figures for both teams. Emily
Joseph led LSSU with 14 points, and Jackie Armstrong, Alyssa
VanderWal and Nicole Marshall had 12 each. Peterson led the Lakers
in rebounds with six. Peterson and Marshall had two steals each.
Lake Superior State shot 49.1 percent from the field for the
game, including 7-of-20 from three-point range and 7-of-8 at the
free-throw line.
Padin, Kim Wyngaard and Kara Crawford scored 13 points each for
GVSU, which shot 49.2 percent from the field, including 9-of-21
from three-point range and 13-of-14 at the line. Grand Valley State
out-rebounded LSSU, 34-24.
LSSU plays host to Northwood at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
