Laker men improve to 7-3 in GLIAC

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team capped its five-game homestand with a 62-46 victory over Wayne State on Saturday.

LSSU (10-5 overall, 7-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) picked up its eighth win in nine games. The Lakers next head up the line for games at Northern Michigan and Michigan owning sole possession of first place in the GLIAC North Division.

Tim VanOudheusden led the Lakers with 20 points and five assists, and Ryan Kuhl followed with 10 points. They shot a combined 14-of-20 from the field against the Warriors.

VanOudheusden, who averaged 24.5 points per game for the week, has scored 20 or more points in seven games this season.

LSSU shot 56.5 percent from the field, including 6-of-15 from three-point range, and made 4-of-10 free throws. The Lakers were 15-for-23 from the field for 65.2 percent during the second half. LSSU's Mike Rader and Scott Perkins, who were both scoreless in the first half, combined to score 17 points during the final 20 minutes.

Bryan Smothers scored 12 points and Jerry Oden added 10 to lead Wayne State (6-8 overall, 4-6 GLIAC). The Warriors shot 30.2 percent from the field, including 4-of-20 from three-point range, and made 10-of-10 free throws.

After leading 26-20 at halftime, Lake Superior State out-scored Wayne State 20-7 during the first seven and one-half minutes of the second half. VanOudheusden scored all 10 of his second-half points during the run, while Rader hit two three-pointers and Kuhl made two field goals. LSSU built a 46-27 command with 12:36 to go and led 56-36 with 6:26 remaining.

Micah Hudson came off the bench to lead LSSU in rebounds with six, while Mark Morse and Rader followed with five each. The Lakers out-rebounded WSU, 32-29.
