Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State set the bar high during
its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's
basketball home opener by making 22 three-point attempts,
including a school-record nine threes by senior guard Mark Morse,
en route to a 102-74 victory over Saginaw Valley State on Saturday.
Morse was on a national-record pace for awhile, making
6-of-8 three-pointers in the first half. He canned all
three attempts in the second half, going 9-of-11 from behind the
arc for the game, and finished the game with 29
points, tying his career high.
Morse didn't attempt another three-pointer after making his
ninth with 12:14 remaining in the game. He broke the previous
single-game school record of eight three-pointers shared by Chris
Wooley in 1989, Eric VanderEyk in 1996, Nick Wolfe in 1997 and Ben
Dewar in 2002. The Division II national record is 16, while the
GLIAC record is 13.
Garrett Konuszewski, Micah Hudson and Kyle Hunt added three
three-pointers each as the Lakers finished 22-of-33 from behind the
arc. Whether LSSU set a team school record for single-game
three-pointers has not yet been determined, but it appears the
Lakers broke the GLIAC single-game team record of 20 set by
Hillsdale on Dec. 19, 1992.
LSSU (7-4 overall, 4-2 GLIAC) shot 72.2 percent
(13-of-18) from three-point range in the first half and 66.7
percent for the game. Overall, the Lakers shot 57.9 percent from
the field.
Six players scored in double figures for the Lakers, who led
54-30 at halftime and went on to record their fifth straight win.
Tim VanOudheusden and Ryan Kuhl scored 13 points each, followed by
Hudson and Hunt with 12 each, and Konuszewski with 11.
Konuszewski, VanOudheusden and Mike Rader contributed five
assists each, while Morse had four. Scott Perkins and Hudson had
six rebounds each, followed by Rader with five. Hunt added five
steals.
LSSU out-rebounded SVSU, 35-33, and made 14-of-19 free throws.
Avery Stephenson scored 21 points to lead the Cardinals (1-9
overall, 1-5 GLIAC). SVSU shot 42.9 percent from the field,
including 8-of-20 from three-point range and 12-of-21 at the
free-throw line.
LSSU continues a five-game homestand at 7:30 p.m. Thursday
against Ferris State. The Lakers currently hold a half-game lead in
the GLIAC North Division standings.
