VanderWal dominated inside, and Lake Superior State cut its
turnovers to a season low to defeat Ferris State 67-52 on Thursday
at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
Armstrong, who finished with 22 points, recorded her seventh
20-point outing in 10 games. She was 5-for-8 from the field
and 8-of-9 at the foul line while scoring 18 points in the second
half.
VanderWal totaled 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Joseph added 14
points.
LSSU (10-5 overall, 3-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference) took off to an early 13-point lead during the game's
first seven minutes. Ferris State (4-7 overall, 1-5
GLIAC) didn't let the Lakers put the game out of reach, but
struggled to close the gap. The Bulldogs cut the lead to four
points, 25-21, with 1:48 remaining in the first half and trailed
29-23 at intermission.
Ronlea Peterson hit a three-pointer at 9:03 of the second half,
and VanderWal and Peterson were both 1-for-2 at the free-throw line
as LSSU extended a five-point lead to 10 points, 48-38. VanderWal,
Joseph, Peterson and Armstrong all contributed during a 7-0 run
that gave the Lakers their biggest lead, 57-43, with 4:44 remaining
in the game.
Lake Superior State shot 42.6 percent from the field, including
23-of-29 at the free-throw line. The Lakers made 4-of-12
three-point attempts and committed only 11 turnovers. The
Lakers average 19.2 turnovers per game.
Caitlin Hutchison scored 13 points to lead the Bulldogs, who
shot 25 percent from the field and made 13-of-17 free throws.
Ferris State out-rebounded LSSU, 42-40.
LSSU sophomore Jill Walton came off the bench to total a
career-high nine boards.
LSSU plays host to Grand Valley State at 1 p.m. Saturday at
Cooper Gym.
