SAULT STE. MARIE - Senior guard Scott Perkins scored 22 points and freshman forward Derek Kinney added 15 as the Lake Superior State men's basketball team posted its first-ever victory over Albion.

The Lakers (6-4) improved to 1-4 all-time against the Britons with Tuesday's 72-57 win at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The last time the teams met was in 1996-97.

LSSU led by as many as 16 points in the first half, but Albion (5-5) trimmed the lead to 34-22 by intermission. The Britons hung around during the second half, cutting a 20-point deficit to 13 points, 61-48, with 3:43 to go. Perkins hit a jumper at 3:22, and Kinney and Andrew Charlesworth made two free throws each to build the lead back to 19 points, 67-48, with less than two minutes to go.

Garrett Konuszewski scored nine points before fouling out. Kyle Hunt led the Lakers in rebounds with seven, followed by Kinney and Charlesworth with six each. Perkins and Hunt totaled five assists each.

LSSU shot 50 percent from the field, including 5-of-20 from three-point range. The Lakers made 17-of-20 free throws and out-rebounded Albion, 33-24.

Kolin Kazen, Anthony Wash and Andrew Bridges scored nine points each to lead Albion. The Britons shot 40 percent from the field, including 5-of-23 from behind the arc. They made 16-of-24 free throws.

LSSU concluded its month-long homestand and finished 5-1. The Lakers play their next five games on the road, starting with a Jan. 2 conference game at Saginaw Valley State.
