Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Five players scored in double figures for the
Lake Superior State women's basketball team, which defeated Ashland
72-55 Saturday to avenge an early-season two-point road loss
and notch a key win against a regionally-ranked opponent.
LSSU (15-11 overall, 8-10 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference) made 24-of-44 field goals (54.5 percent) and held
Ashland (14-9 overall, 10-8 GLIAC) to a season-low 26.3 percent.
The Lakers snapped the Eagles' four-game win streak, which included
an overtime victory over league co-leader Michigan Tech.
Jaclyn Armstrong totaled 19 points, eight rebounds and three
assists to lead the Lakers, who shot over 50 percent from the
field for the eighth time this season. Alyssa VanderWal added 12
points and eight rebounds as the senior post players combined to
make 12-of-19 field-goal attempts and 7-of-7 free throws.
Nicole Marshall and Shelle Rochon scored 11 points each, and
Emily Joseph added 10 points.
LSSU cruised to a 10-0 lead during the first six minutes of the
game and didn't allow Ashland to make a field goal until the 11:48
mark in the first half. Ashland cut the lead to four points, 27-23,
with 1:37 to go, but Marshall scored at the buzzer to give LSSU a
34-27 halftime lead.
Armstrong scored six points and Marshall hit a
three-pointer as LSSU opened the second half with a 13-1 run.
The Lakers led 47-28 with 16:47 remaining and build a 20-point lead
with less than 10 minutes to go.
Rachel Poorman led Ashland with 12 points. The Eagles entered
this week ranked 10th in the NCAA Midwest Region poll. LSSU
improved to 2-6 against regionally-ranked teams.
The Eagles were 3-for-16 from three-point range and 22-of-25 at
the free-throw line. LSSU was 3-of-13 from behind the arc and made
21-of-22 free throws. The Lakers out-rebounded Ashland, 36-28.
LSSU travels to Grand Valley State on Feb. 19.
