Box Score ALLENDALE - Grand Valley State made 14-of-28 three-point
attempts to beat Lake Superior State 69-66 in a Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball showdown
Thursday.
The three-point loss left LSSU (15-12 overall, 8-11
GLIAC) in a three-way tie with Northern Michigan and Ferris
State for third place in the GLIAC North Division. The Lakers
play at FSU at 1 p.m. Saturday. NMU snuck into that deadlock by
upsetting GLIAC South Division leader Hillsdale, 69-68, Thursday.
The Wildcats' win left Michigan Tech with the best conference
record with three regular-season games remaining.
GVSU (18-6 overall, 14-5 GLIAC) trailed 33-30 at halftime, then
opened the second half by making three of its first four shots --
all from three-point range. GVSU's Kelly Kretz made two
three-pointers to give her team a 10-point lead, 52-42, with 11:57
remaining.
LSSU roared back with a 12-0 run that included two
three-pointers and a field goal by Shelle Rochon. The Lakers led
54-52 with 9:36 to go, and the rest of the game was a fight to the
finish. Elizabeth Van Tiflin's three-pointer with 21 seconds to go
wound up being the deciding factor.
Jasmine Padin was 5-for-8 from behind the arc and led all
scorers with 23 points. Rochon, who entered the contest
averaging 4.6 points per game, led LSSU with 21 points. She has
averaged 15.8 points per game in four games against Grand
Valley State spanning the last two seasons.
GVSU shot 40 percent from the field and made 3-of-4 free throws.
Alyssa VanderWal, playing in front of her hometown crowd,
finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots. Jaclyn
Armstrong added 11 points and two steals. LSSU shot 52 percent from
the field, including 7-of-18 from three-point range, and made
7-of-9 free throws. The Lakers out-rebounded GVSU, 36-29.
