Box Score BIG RAPIDS - Ferris State defeated Lake Superior State 69-66
Saturday to break up a three-way tie for third place in the Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division standings.
The Bulldogs (11-13 overall, 9-11 GLIAC) and Lakers (15-13
overall, 8-12 GLIAC) split their regular-season series. LSSU is now
tied for fourth place with Northern Michigan in the North Division
heading into its final home games against Michigan Tech on Feb. 26
and NMU on Feb. 28. The Lakers, who need a top-eight finish to
qualify for the GLIAC Tournament, share the seventh-place league
record with the Wildcats and Findlay.
FSU's Teghan Thelen made back-to-back baskets to help her team
pull away from a 59-59 tie during the final three and one-half
minutes of the game. LSSU's Emily Joseph scored to cut the lead to
63-61 with 2:31 remaining, but the Bulldogs' answered at 2:04.
LSSU's Jackie Armstrong, who led all scorers with 26 points and
13 rebounds, converted a three-point play to make it a one-point
game, 65-64, with 51 seconds to go. Bulldog Ashley Fleming answered
with 24 seconds left. Lake Superior State was forced to foul after
missing a three-point attempt at the 11-second mark.
Joseph finished with 13 points and five rebounds, and Alyssa
VanderWal had six points and 12 rebounds. Shelle Rochon scored
eight points. The Lakers shot 38.5 percent from the field,
including 3-of-13 from three-point range, and made 13-of-18 free
throws. They out-rebounded Ferris State, 41-36.
Thelen led the Bulldogs with 21 points, and Jenna Guay followed
with 12. FSU shot 46.7 percent from the field, including 4-of-11
from three-point range, and made 9-of-13 free throws.
