Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State set the tempo of
Thursday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's
basketball game, but No. 20 Michigan Tech flipped the switch with
10 minutes to go.
The Huskies (21-5 overall, 18-3 GLIAC) began pressing after
falling behind 51-40 with 11 minutes remaining. With the help
of back-to-back three-pointers by Sarah Stream and Danae Danen,
they went on a 10-0 run in just over three minutes. They took a
56-54 lead with 5:47 remaining and never relinquished it.
LSSU, playing without starting guard Ronlea Peterson due to
illness, otherwise controlled the game. The Lakers (15-14 overall,
8-13 GLIAC) shot 57.1 percent in the first half to lead 30-26.
Emily Joseph made a three-pointer and converted a three-point play
to give them their double-digit lead midway through the second
half.
Marshall scored 10 points in the first half and finished with 16
points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jaclyn
Armstrong added 14 points and two steals, and Joseph had 10 points
and eight assists. Shelle Rochon, who has also been battling
illness, was 2-for-2 from three-point range and scored eight
points. Allison Jaynes came off the bench to contribute seven
points.
LSSU, which lost by 18 points at Michigan Tech in
January, shot 47.8 percent from the field, including 7-of-14
from three-point range.
Danen led MTU in scoring with 18 points, and Katie Wysocky
totaled 15 points and 11 rebounds. Stream finished with 16 points
and five assists. The Huskies shot 54.8 percent from the field for
the game, including 14-of-21 (66.7 percent) in the second half.
They out-rebounded LSSU, 27-22.
LSSU's hopes for a GLIAC Tournament bid rest on Saturday's
performance against Northern Michigan. The Lakers take on the
Wildcats at 1 p.m. at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
