Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Two members of the Lake Superior State
women's basketball team have been named to the 'ESPN The Magazine'
Academic All-District Team in District IV of the College Division.
Senior forward/center Jaclyn Armstrong (Haslett, Mich.), who has
a 3.94 grade point average while majoring in exercise science, was
named to the first team. Senior center Alyssa VanderWal (Allendale,
Mich.), who has a 3.91 gpa while majoring in nursing, received
third team honors. By making the first team, Armstrong moves on to
the national ballot and becomes an academic all-America candidate.
Armstrong is the No. 2 scorer in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference, averaging 17.0 points per game. She is also
ranked 14th in the league in rebounding at 5.7 rpg. The pre-season
All-GLIAC First Team pick is also expected to earn her third GLIAC
All-Academic Team honor this season.
VanderWal, who averages 11.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per
game, leads the GLIAC in field-goal percentage at 66.7 percent
and is second in the league in average blocked shots per game
(2.5). She is also ranked sixth in the GLIAC in rebounding and
seventh in free-throw percentage (.746). VanderWal and senior Tim
VanOudheusden of the men's basketball team are the first two
Laker basketball players to go through LSSU rigorous nursing
program.
Joining Armstrong on the first team were Northwood's Megan
Starnes, Ferris State's Caitlin Hutchison and Tiffin's Leanne
Lucius, along with Ariel Brough of Baldwin-Wallace and Ashley
Boykin of Alabama-Huntsville. Other GLIAC players receiving
recognition were Michigan Tech's Sarah Stream and Katie Wysocky,
who made the second team.
The college division includes Division II and Division III
schools.
