Box Score DETROIT - Lake Superior State once again proved to be a strong
second-half team. Saturday's comeback from a seven-point deficit
carried the Lakers to a 72-64 win at Wayne State and clinched their
first winning season since 2001-02.
LSSU improved to 15-6 overall and 12-4 in the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference heading into Thursday's home
game against Tiffin. The Lakers finished 2-0 during the regular
season against WSU (8-12 overall, 6-10 GLIAC) and are in first
place in the GLIAC North Division.
LSSU's Mark Morse and WSU's Bryan Smothers traded three-point
field goals during the final nine seconds of the first half, but
the Warriors went into the lockerroom with a 35-33 lead after
leading by as many as five points.
Wayne State built its biggest lead of the game, 60-53, with 8:56
remaining. Lake Superior State responded with a 10-2 run as Tim
VanOudheusden made three field goals and a free throw, and
Mike Rader hit a three-pointer. VanOudheusden's jumper at 4:26 gave
the Lakers a one-point advantage, 63-62.
Scott Perkins made a three-pointer with 3:29 remaining to give
LSSU a 66-64 lead. Wayne State was 0-for-7 from the field and
0-for-2 at the free-throw line the rest of the way. Lakers Mark
Morse and Ryan Kuhl combined to go 6-for-6 at the free-throw line
during the final 1:46 to seal the win.
VanOudheusden finished with 17 points, while Kuhl and 15, Micah
Hudson 12 and Morse 10. Hudson was 4-for-7, Perkins 3-for-5 and
Morse 2-for-3 as LSSU made 11-of-22 three-point field goals.
The Lakers shot 52.3 percent from the field overall.
Shane Lawal and Smothers scored 16 points each to lead Wayne
State, which shot 43.1 percent from the field, including 7-of-15
from three-point range.
LSSU was 15-for-18 at the line, while WSU finished 7-for-10. The
Warriors out-rebounded the Lakers, 36-21.
