Box Score DETROIT - After cruising to an 18-point victory over Wayne
State on its home court less than a month ago, the Lake
Superior State women's basketball team found the Warriors to be a
tougher opponent on the road. It took a last-second offensive
rebound and field goal by Jackie Armstrong to beat WSU 53-51
Saturday.
LSSU (14-10 overall, 7-9 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference) struggled to score against Wayne State (6-15 overall,
4-12 GLIAC). The Lakers were scoreless during the final four
minutes of the first half and trailed 29-26 at halftime.
The second half was close from start to finish. Lake Superior
State took a four-point lead, 48-44, on a three-pointer by Ronlea
Peterson with 3:05 remaining. Wayne State took advantage of a Laker
turnover and made back-to-back field goals to tie it, 48-48, with
1:49 to go.
Peterson hit another three-pointer at the 1:24 mark, but WSU's
Brooke Bowers answered with 57 seconds left. Peterson tried to
score again from long range, but missed. LSSU fouled as the Wayne
State grabbed the defensive rebound, but the Warriors missed the
front end of the one-and-one. Nicole Marshall rebounded the missed
free throw, setting up the Lakers' game-winning play.
Armstrong led LSSU with 21 points and four assists. Peterson was
4-of-7 from behind the arc and finished with 14 points, and
Marshall totaled 11 points and seven rebounds. Alyssa VanderWal was
held to three points, but contributed 10 rebounds.
Brittany Smith led Wayne State with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
LSSU shot 35.7 percent from the field, including 7-of-19 from
three-point range. Wayne State shot 33.9 percent from the field,
including 5-of-13 from three-point range. Both teams totaled
39 rebounds and were 6-of-9 at the free-throw line.
The Lakers return home to play host to Tiffin at 5:30
p.m. Thursday.
