Box Score UNIVERSITY CENTER - Saginaw Valley State's Aysha Boston sank a
half-court desperation shot at the buzzer to beat the Lake Superior
State women's basketball team 62-60 and snap the Lakers' six-game
win streak.
The Lakers (7-3 overall, 4-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference), playing their first road game since Nov. 28,
shot only 32.9 percent from the field and made 8-of-14 free
throws against SVSU (4-6 overall, 2-3 GLIAC). They were 22-of-24 at
the line when they beat the Cardinals by 27 points at home on Dec.
12.
After trailing 27-22 at halftime, Saginaw Valley State opened
the second half with a 10-0 run. The Cardinals led throughout most
of the second half until Lakers Emily Joseph and Nicole Marshal
made back-to-back baskets during the final minute of play. LSSU's
Alyssa Loney rebounded the back end of a SVSU one-and-one, setting
up a three-pointer by Marshall, who gave the Lakers a 60-59 lead
with five seconds to go.
Boston, who hit the game-winner, was 3-for-6 from behind the arc
and scored 11 points.
Marshall led LSSU with 16 points and five rebounds, followed by
Maria Blazejewski with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Shelle Rochon
came off the bench to score nine points, while Loney did the same
and had eight points.
Brittany Burkhardt led SVSU with 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Cardinals shot 44 percent from the field, including 6-of-15
from three-point range, and made 12-of-17 free throws.
Both teams totaled 41 rebounds. LSSU forced 20 SVSU turnovers
and committed 12.
