Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State completed
its non-conference sweep with a 5-4 victory over Colgate Saturday
at Taffy Abel Arena. It was LSSU's first home sweep
since Jan. 15-and 16, 2010, at home against the University of
Nebraska-Omaha.
The Lakers (2-3-1 overall) started the evening with a goal
late in the first period. Senior forward Chad Nehring scored his
first goal of the season, and got assists from junior forward
Dan Barczuk (1-2—3) and freshman forward Kyle Jean
(0-2—2).
At 1:44 of the second, Colgate's Thomas Larkin tied the
game at 1-1. The Raids (1-2-0 overall) took a
2-1 lead with a power-play goal from Brian Day at 13:05.
LSSU tied it, 2-2, at the 18:16 mark of the second
period. Senior defenseman Matt Cowie (3-0—3) scored from
defensive partner sophomore Zach Trotman (3-3—6) and senior
forward Rick Schofield (3-5—8). Forty-one seconds later, LSSU
took a 3-2 lead as sophomore forward Fred Cassiani
(1-0—1) netted his first goal of the season. Cassiani's
goal was assisted by freshman forward Dan Radke (1-1—2) and
junior defenseman Kyle Haines (0-2—2).
The Raiders tied the game at three apiece with a power-play goal
by Robbie Bourdon at 5:56 of the third period.
Freshman forward Colin Campbell (1-0—1) netted his first
goal as a Laker, giving LSSU at 4-3 lead. Campbell's goal was
assisted by senior forward Will Acton (1-6—7) and senior
defenseman Dillin Stonehouse (0-1—1). Day tied it
again, 4-4, at 11:28 of the third for his second goal of the
game.
Radke tallied his first goal as a Laker and his first
collegiate game-winning goal with only 14 seconds of play
left in regulation. Radke's goal was assisted by Trotman.
Freshman netminder Kevin Kapalka (1-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 CCHA)
recorded is first win as a Laker after making 26 saves for the
night. The Lakers put a total of 35 shots on net.
LSSU was 0-for-3 on the power-play, while Colgate was
2-for-6.
The Lakers will hit the road to play cluster opponent Miami Oct.
29-30.
