Box Score HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State
women's basketball team scored an important non-conference win
by beating Minnesota-Duluth 64-54 Friday at Michigan Tech.
Nicole Marshall scored 18 points, and Ronlea Peterson had 15 to
lead the Lakers (2-1). Cassy Schemberger added 13 points and seven
rebounds.
Lindsay Miller totaled 20 points and eight rebounds for UM-D
(1-1), which was an NCAA Tournament qualifier in 2009-10 and a
16-point victory over Northern Michigan earlier in the week.
Both teams shot only 37.5 percent from the field. The Bulldogs
struggled in the first half, hitting only 31.8 percent of their
shots, while the Lakers struggled in the second half at a 33.3
percent clip.
Minnesota-Duluth opened the second half with a 12-2 run to tie
it 36-36 with 16:58 remaining. LSSU's Maria Blazejewski made a
layup and one of two free throws to protect a six-point Laker lead
with 2:23 to go.
LSSU made the most of its free-throw opportunities. Emily
Joseph, Peterson and Marshall were a combined 18-of-21 as the
Lakers made 24-of-29 free throws for the night.
UM-D was 11-of-19 at the free-throw line, but out-rebounded
LSSU, 40-28. The Bulldogs made 7-of-20 three-point attempts, while
the Lakers made 4-of-17.
LSSU plays Finlandia at 3 p.m. Saturday at MTU.
