Box Score DENVER, Colo. - Denver outscored Lake Superior State's hockey
team 3-1 during the final 10:29 of the third period and went
on to win 6-3 during Friday's first round of the Denver
Cup.
The Lakers (5-8-2 overall) are now 0-2-0 all-time against
the 12th-ranked Pioneers (9-4-2 overall).
After 1:15 of 4-on-4 action in the first period, the
Pioneers netted the first goal of the game. Denver's Kyle
Ostrow scored at 14:15 of the first period with assists going
to Shawn Ostrow and Matt Donovan.
Lakers tied the game at one a piece with a short-handed goal
from sophomore defender Zach Trotman (4-6—10) at 3:10 of the
second period. Trotman's goal is LSSU's first
short-handed goal of the season.
The Pioneers scored twice during a 2:39 span late in the second
period to lead 3-1 at intermission. Drew Shore, who led Denver
with 3-1--4, netted his first goal of the game at 19:57 of the
second period to give the Pioneers a two-goal
advantage.
LSSU senior forward Rick Schofield (5-8—12) netted his
fifth goal of the season at 3:26 of the third period, bringing the
Lakers within one goal of the Pioneers. Schofield's goal was
assisted by senior forward Will Acton (2-8—10) and senior
defender Dillin Stonehouse (0-3—3). Denver's Justin Jackson
answered with a game-winning power-play goal at 9:21.
At 11:47 of the third period, LSSU sophomore forward
Domenic Monardo (7-8—15) netted an unassisted
goal, trimming the Lakers' deficit to 4-3.
Denver put the game away as Shore made it 5-3 at 14:41 and
netted his third goal of the game at 18:20.
The Pioneers tallied two power-play goals in the third
period. The Lakers finished 0-for-2 and the Pioneers 2-for-5
on the power-play.
LSSU senior goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson made 34 saves for
the night. Denver's Sam Brittain stopped 25 shots on
goal.
In the other first-round game of the Denver Cup, Air Force
defeated Clarkson, 2-1.
