Three-point touch provides the edge for LSSU men

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State's superior three-point shooting was the deciding factor in Saturday's 71-64 men's basketball victory over Saginaw Valley State Saturday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

LSSU (7-3 overall, 2-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) missed the front end of two one-and-ones, but made 5-of-12 three-pointers to lead 33-31 at halftime. Senior forward Andrew Charlesworth was 4-for-4 from the field, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc to lead the Lakers with 13 points. Junior guard Kyle Hunt made the other two.

Sophomore Derek Kinney came off the bench and hit a three-pointer and two free throws, and Hunt followed with back-to-back three-pointers during an 11-0 run that gave Lake Superior State a 54-38 lead with 11:12 remaining in the second half.

LSSU extended the lead to 20 points, 64-44, with 5:39 to go, but the Cardinals (3-6 overall, 0-4 GLIAC) responded with a 7-1 run. SVSU trimmed the margin to 11 points, 67-56, with 1:34 remaining, and cut it to six, 67-61, with 31 seconds left. Hunt was 4-of-4 at the free-throw line during the final 11 seconds as LSSU struggled to put the game out of reach.

Charlesworth finished with 19 points, which ties his career high, and eight rebounds to lead LSSU. Hunt totaled 17 points, six rebounds and six assists. Senior Justin Williams, a 6-7 center who battled 6-10 Adam Roberts and 6-10 Taylor Brule throughout the day, totaled 11 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior guard Micah Hudson turned in eight points and five assists.

The Lakers shot 46.7 percent from the field, including 11-of-27 from three-point range, and made 18-of-28 free throws.

Eli Redman led SVSU with 17 points and was one of four Cardinals in double figures. Roberts totaled two points and 13 rebounds as Saginaw Valley State out-rebounded LSSU, 46-37. The Cardinals shot 31.4 percent from the field, including 3-of-23 from behind the arc. They made 17-of-23 free throws.

LSSU plays a non-conference home game at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30, against Cedarville College.
