Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State (5-9-3
overall, 3-6-2-1 Central Collegiate Hockey
Association) extended its home-ice unbeaten streak to
four games by tying Bowling Green (6-10-1 overall, 2-8-1-0
CCHA) 1-1 Friday at Taffy Abel Arena. The Lakers skated away with
two points after taking the shootout victory in three
rounds.
The last time the Lakers won a shootout was Jan. 23,
2010, against Notre Dame.
LSSU and BGSU were scoreless in the first period. At 6:54 of the
second period, the Falcons notched their only goal of the night.
Chad Sumsion recorded a power-play goal from Marc Rodriguez and
David Solway.
The Lakers found the back of the net at 6:19 of the third
period. Senior forward Rick Schofield (6-8—14) tallied
the game-tying goal on assists from senior defender Matt Cowie
(4-3—7) and sophomore forward Domenic Monardo
(8-8—16).
LSSU was held to 0-for-3 on the power-play, and the Falcons were
1-for-3.
Freshman goaltender Kevin Kapalka (4-4-2-1) totaled 36 saves,
including a two key saves during a BGSU break-away two minutes
into the overtime session. He recorded his first shootout
victory, which LSSU won 2-1. Senior Chad Nehring and sophomore Ben
Power scored LSSU's shootout goals. Power's goal secured the extra
point for Lake Superior State.
Nick Eno of BGSU stopped 26 shots.
The Lakers will be back in action Saturday against the Falcons
at 7:05 p.m.
