Laker women even GLIAC record

ASHLAND, Ohio - Lake Superior State held Ashland scoreless during the final three minutes of Saturday's women's basketball game and won 65-53 to even its record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

With the win, the Lakers (12-10 overall, 9-9 GLIAC) swept an important road series. They return home to play North Division rivals Grand Valley State and Ferris State next week.

Ashland's Daiva Gerbec scored with 3:04 remaining to cut LSSU's lead to 59-53. The Eagles (12-11 overall, 8-10 GLIAC) failed to score during their next two possessions. Laker Emily Joseph made a layup with 1:06 remaining for a 61-53 LSSU lead. Nicole Marshall and Cassy Schemberger made two free throws each during the final 45 seconds. 

Marshall scored 15 points to lead the Lakers in scoring. Schemberger finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Ronlea Peterson totaled 12 points and six rebounds. Maria Blazejewski also scored 12 points, and Joseph finished with 10.

Micki Kuns led Ashland with 17 points and five rebounds. Gerbec finished with 13 points and eight boards.

LSSU shot 46 percent from the field, including 5-of-14 from behind the arc. The Lakers made 10-of-14 free throws. Ashland shot 39 percent from the field, including 3-of-12 from three-point range, and made 10-of-12 free throws.

Ashland out-rebounded LSSU, 32-31.

The Lakers led 33-28 at halftime.
