Box Score MARQUETTE - After going 5-for-28 from behind the arc during
Thursday's three-point loss at Michigan Tech, the Lake Superior
State men's basketball team regained its long-range shooting touch
to beat Northern Michigan 83-79 during Saturday's regular-season
finale.
The Lakers (14-13 overall, 12-10 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference) have won two of their last three games heading
into the conference tournament, which begins Tuesday. NMU finished
its season 11-15 overall and 8-14 in the GLIAC.
Scott Perkins was 4-for-7, and Kyle Hunt and Micah Hudson had
two three-pointers apiece as LSSU was 10-of-21 from three-point
range against the Wildcats. Perkins led the Lakers with 27 points,
five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Hunt added 17 points,
seven rebounds and three assists.
Center Justin Williams scored nine points for the Lakers,
followed by Hudson with eight. Garrett Konuszewski led the Lakers
in rebounds with eight.
LSSU and NMU were tied 37-37 at halftime. The Lakers made only
nine second-half field goals, but canned 24-of-29 free throws. They
were 29-of-36 at the foul line for the game. Northern Michigan was
10-of-13 and had three players foul out.
Lake Superior State's game-winning run started when Hunt was
fouled on the defensive boards and made two free throws to tie
it 75-75 with 1:57 to go. Perkins went to the line at 1:07
following an NMU turnover. He missed the first of two free throws
for his first miss of the day, but made the second for a 76-75 LSSU
advantage.
After another NMU turnover, Hunt made two free throws for a
78-75 Laker lead at :47. LSSU recovered a loose ball after a
Wildcat miss, leading to two more Hunt free throws with 22 seconds
remaining.
During the final 10 seconds, Hunt was 1-of-2 at the line and
Konuszewski made two foul shots.
Hunt and Perkins were a combined 16-of-18 at the free-throw line
for the game.
Raymont McElroy scored 25 points and Marc Renelique followed
with 23 to lead Northern Michigan. The Wildcats shot 44.8 percent
from the field, including 9-of-28 from three-point range.
LSSU shot 42.3 percent from the field and out-rebounded NMU,
37-34.
Lake Superior State earned the No. 6 seed in the GLIAC
Tournament and will play No. 3 seed Hillsdale at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
