Lakers spread out scoring, get back on winning track

SAULT STE. MARIE - Five Lake Superior State players scored nine or more points, and four hit shots from behind the arc as the Laker women's basketball team spread out its scoring to beat Northwood 65-50 Thursday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Junior guard Nicole Marshall scored 13 of her team-leading 16 points in the first half as LSSU (10-9 overall, 7-8 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) cruised to a 33-21 lead.

Ronlea Peterson, Shelle Rochon and Marshall hit three-pointers during a 13-4 LSSU run that gave the Lakers a 50-30 lead during the first eight minutes of the second half.

Northwood (10-9 overall, 6-9 GLIAC), which has only seven healthy players on its roster, battled within eight points, 52-44, with 6:29 remaining. Rochon canned another three-pointer at 5:11 to kill the Timberwolves' momentum.

Peterson finished with 13 points, and Cassy Schemberger had 10 points and nine rebounds for LSSU. Maria Blazejewski and Rochon scored nine points each. Marshall also contributed seven rebounds and three assists, while Peterson and Emily Joseph combined to total nine assists.

Pam Wilson totaled 28 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead Northwood. The Timberwolves shot 36.5 percent from the field, including 3-of-18 from three-point range, and made 9-of-16 free throws. They out-rebounded the Lakers, 32-30.

LSSU shot 46.7 percent from the field, including 9-of-20 from three-point range, and made 14-of-19 free throws. The Lakers totaled nine turnovers to Northwood's 11.

Lake Superior State plays host to Wayne State at 1 p.m. Saturday.
