Box Score HOUGHTON, Mich. - Ninth-ranked Michigan Tech held onto the top
spot in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North
Division by beating Lake Superior State 69-66 Thursday.
Heading into the game, MTU (12-1 overall, 7-0 GLIAC) and LSSU
(9-4 overall, 6-1 GLIAC) were owned perfect conference records in
the women's basketball standings. Now, LSSU and GLIAC South
Division leader Findlay have one loss each.
Michigan Tech controlled the boards, 35-25, and got a 16-point,
11-rebound double double from Lucy Dernovsek (5-11). Lindsey
Lindstrom (6-0) added 13 points and nine rebounds. Lisa Staelin
(6-2) led the Huskies in scoring with 20 points.
LSSU senior guard Emily Joseph maintained her claim to being the
GLIAC's top scorer by totaling 22 points and four assists. It was
her sixth 20-point effort in seven games. Forward Maria Blazejewski
scored 17 points, while guard Nicole Marshall had 15 points and
five rebounds. Center Cassy Schemberger led the Lakers in rebounds
with 11, but struggled with foul trouble.
Michigan Tech came back from a 35-30 halftime deficit to tie it,
40-40, less than four minutes into the second half. The game was
later tied, 60-60, with 6:14 remaining. LSSU missed five straight
shots during five different possessions as the Huskies built a
65-60 lead during the next three minutes.
The Lakers trailed by six, 67-61, with 36 seconds to go, but
still had a chance to tie it at the buzzer. Schemberger made a
jumper to cut it to four. After MTU's Angela Guisfredi made two
free throws, Joseph converted a three-point play for the 69-66
margin. MTU missed a free throw with four seconds left, but
Guisfredi held the rebound as time expired.
Michigan Tech was 14-of-25 from the field for 56 percent during
the second half and held LSSU to 10-of-28 for 35.7 percent.
LSSU shot 46 percent from the field for the game, including
5-of-11 from three-point range. The Lakers, who entered the week
leading the nation in free-throw percentage, made 13-of-16 free
throws.
Michigan Tech shot 49 percent from the field for the game,
including 4-of-11 from three-point range. The Huskies sank 15-of-22
free throws.
Both teams totaled 10 turnovers.
LSSU plays at Northern Michigan at 3 p.m. Saturday.
