and a last-second three-pointer opened the door for 11th-ranked
Grand Valley State to overtake Lake Superior State late during
Saturday's women's basketball game, but LSSU prevailed in overtime
to win 79-72 and remained unbeaten in the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
LSSU improved to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in the GLIAC heading into
Thursday's showdown at Michigan Tech, which is the league's only
other undefeated team.
Lake Superior State led 39-35 at halftime and trailed only once
during the second half, when GVSU's Jasmine Padin hit a
three-pointer for a 43-41 edge with 15:22 to go.
LSSU's Emily Joseph, who has scored 20 or more points during
five of her last six games, canned a three-pointer with 1:40
remaining to give her team its biggest lead of the second half,
63-57.
LSSU, which entered the week ranked No. 1 nationally in team
free-throw percentage, missed two free throws at the 2:11 mark and
missed the front end of a one-and-one with 1:16 to go. GVSU's
Elizabeth Van Tiflin cashed in after the missed one-and-one by
making a three-pointer and cutting LSSU's lead to 63-62. Joseph
answered again by nailing a jumper with 42 seconds to go, but
Padine tied it, 65-65, by hitting another triple with 12 seconds
left.
Lake Superior State was 7-of-12 at the free-throw line during
overtime and 17-of-26 for the game. The deciding factor during the
extra session was a three-pointer by Nicole Marshall with 49
seconds remaining that broke a 72-72 deadlock, and a steal by
Joseph with 26 seconds remaining.
Joseph finished with 24 points, seven rebounds, six assists and
two steals. Maria Blazejewski followed with 19 points and six
rebounds. Marshall totaled 12 points, seven rebounds and four
assists, while Ronlea Peterson chipped in 11 points, six rebounds
and four assists. LSSU out-rebounded GVSU, 41-37.
Alex Stelfox scored 21 points, and Padin finished with 13 points
and six assists to lead GVSU. Grand Valley State shot 43.3 percent
from the field, including 8-of-22 from three-point range. The
Lakers made 6-of-8 free throws.
Lake Superior State shot 41.5 percent from the field, including
8-of-21 from three-point range.
