Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio - Lake Superior State lost 5-2 at Ohio State,
enabling the seventh-ranked Buckeyes to overtake Notre Dame and
move into first place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association
standings. The Lakers now stand at 10-5-2 overall and 6-4-1-1 in
the CCHA. Both LSSU goals were scored by freshmen.
Ohio State (11-3-1 overall, 8-2-1-1 CCHA) led 2-0 at the end of
the first period. Neither team was able to net a goal during the
second period of play. At 4:50 of the third period, Danny Dries
scored OSU's game-winning goal. It was his second goal of the
night.
At 9:43 of the third period, LSSU freshman defender Kevin
Czuczman (2-2--4) scored a power-play goal on assists from
sophomore forward Dan Radke (1-2--3) and junior defenseman Zach
Trotman (6-7--13).
The Buckeyes answered with a goal at 12:55 of the third period
to reclaim a three-goal cusion. Freshman forward Buddy Robinson
(2-2--4) scored the Lakers' second goal at 15:06 of the third from
senior defender Kyle Haines (1-9--10) and junior forward Ben Power
(1-4--5). Dries netted Ohio State's final goal at 17:09. It was an
empty-net goal.
LSSU was 1-for-2 on the power-play, while OSU was 1-for-3.
Sophomore goaltender Kevin Kapalka (9-5-2overall, 6-4-1-1
CCHA) made 28 saves for the Lakers. Cal Heeter stopped 29 shots for
the Buckeyes.
The Lakers and Buckeyes face off Saturay at 8:05 p.m. for game
two of the series. Ohio State now has 26 points in the CCHA
standings, followed by Notre Dame with 24 and Lake Superior State
with 20.
