Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State made the big shots
at the end of regulation to send Saturday's women's basketball
showdown with No. 8 Michigan Tech into overtime. The Huskies made
the big shots during the extra session to prevail, 70-68.
In a matchup of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference North Division's top two teams, Michigan Tech (19-2
overall, 14-1 GLIAC) led by as many as eight points during the
first half and seven points during the second half.
Senior guard Nicole Marshall hit a three pointer to start an
11-4 run that enabled Lake Superior State (15-7 overall, 12-4
GLIAC) to tie the game 39-39 with 11:12 remaining in the second
half. An Emily Joseph three-pointer gave LSSU its first lead of the
second half, 43-42, with 9:10 to go.
After several minutes of evenly-matched play, Joseph made a
driving layup for a 57-56 LSSU lead with 20 seconds remaining in
regulation. Michigan Tech's Lisa Staehlin answered with a layup and
drew a foul with 12 seconds to go. She made the free throw for a
59-57 MTU edge.
LSSU's Cassy Schemberger rebounded Joseph's missed shot from
underneath and drew a foul with a half-second remaining. She sank
both free throws, knotting the score at 59-59 and sending the game
into overtime.
With six lead changes in overtime, niether team held an
advantage until LSSU committed a turnover at the 17-second
mark with MTU leading, 69-68. The Lakers were forced to foul
and sent the Huskies' Sam Hoyt to the line. She made the second of
two free throws for the 70-68 difference. Lake Superior State
missed two shots during the final six seconds.
LSSU's Maria Blazejewski led all scorers with a
career-high 23 points and added seven rebounds. Schemberger
finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds for her second double
double of the season. Marshall totaled 13 points and five rebounds.
Joseph added 10 points, six rebounds and six assists. Ronlea
Peterson contributed six points, five rebounds and four assists to
round out the Lakers' starting lineup stats.
Lake Superior State shot 43.1 percent from the field, including
4-of-5 from three-point range, and made 14-of-22 free throws. The
Lakers out-rebounded Michigan Tech, 47-33.
Staehlin totaled 17 points and five rebounds, and Angela
Guisfredi added 16 points to lead MTU. Lucy
Dernovsek contributed 15 points and eight rebounds. The
Huskies shot 39.7 percent from the field, including 9-fo-26 from
three-point range, and made 11-of-17 free throws.
MTU, which is now 2-0 against LSSU in 2010-11, led
30-26 at halftime.
LSSU plays host to Northwood at 3 p.m. on Feb. 19.
