Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - The Northwood women's basketball team, 11-2
during its last 13 games, held Lake Superior State to a season-low
15 field goals and 29.4 percent from the field, and avenged an
early-season loss with a 60-49 win Saturday at Bud Cooper
Gymnasium.
Northwood (14-9 overall, 10-7 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference) vastly improved its chances of making the
GLIAC Tournament with the win, while Lake Superior State (15-8
overall, 12-5 GLIAC) dropped from second to third in the GLIAC
North Division and hurt its chances of hosting a quarterfinal game.
LSSU is one of three teams that already clinched a GLIAC
Tournament berth.
Senior guard Ronlea Peterson led LSSU at both ends of the court
and finished with nine points and nine rebounds. Forward Maria
Blazejewski made 9-of-10 free throws to score a team-high
18 points.
LSSU was 5-of-19 from three-point range and 14-of-19 at the
free-throw line.
GLIAC Pre-Season Player of the Year Pam Wilson, who was held to
four points during the teams' first meeting in December, led
Northwood with 17 points and nine rebounds. Savannah Stedman came
off the bench and added 14 points, and Rachel Church had
10.
Northwood shot 41.7 percent from the field, including 5-of-15
from behind the arc, and made 15-of-23 free throws. The
Timberwolves out-rebounded the Lakers, 40-30.
LSSU travels to Wayne State on Thursday, Feb. 24.
