Lakers tie playoff series and head to if-necessary game

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Lake Superior State (13-16-9) defeated Notre Dame (22-11-5), 4-3, Saturday during game two the of Central Collegiate Hockey Association Second Round Playoffs. LSSU and eighth-ranked UND play Sunday at 7:05 for the series decider and the chance to advance to the CCHA Semifinals at Joe Louis Arena.

Notre Dame's T.J. Tynan netted the first goal of the game at 9:12 of first period from Bryan Rust and Stephan Johns. The Irish took a 2-0 lead at 10:32 of the first period with a goal from Nick Larson.

Freshman forward Kellan Lain (4-4—8) scored the game's only power-play goal and brought the Lakers within one goal at 18:37 of the opening period. Kyle Haines (4-5—9) and Kyle Jean (1-13—14) drew the assists. The Lakers tied it, 2-2, when junior forward Fred Cassiani (6-5—11) netted his first of two goals for the night at 16:07 of the second period. Cassiani's goal was assisted by sophomore forward Domenic Monardo (12-17—29) and Jean.

Calle Ridderwall regained UND's one-goal lead 23 seconds later, but LSSU regrouped and controlled play the rest of the way.

Senior forward Chad Nehring (8-4—12) tied it, 3-3, at 18:55 of the second period. Senior forward Tyson Hobbins (1-5—6) and Lain assisted.

Cassiani netted the game-winning goal at 7:40 of the third period. Sophomore forward Zach Trotman (6-14—20) and Lain were credited with the assists.

Freshman goalie Kevin Kapalka (12-11-8-5) stopped 39 shots, while Mike Johnson made 40 saves during the game.

The Lakers were 1-for-3 on the power-play and held Notre Dame to 0-for-5. They killed off two penalties during the final 4:23, and fended off a two-man Irish advantage for a minute after UND pulled Johnson in favor of an extra attacker.

Western Michigan defeated Ferris State, 3-1, Saturday and also sent that series to a third game. Michigan, which beat Bowling Green State, 4-1, and Miami, which also won 4-1 over Alaska, swept their series and will advance to the CCHA Semifinals at Joe Louis Arena.
