off regularion and the first overtime in thrilling
fashion during Wednesday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference women's basketball quarterfinal game at Bud Cooper
Gymnasium. Hillsdale barely averted another show-stopper when Laker
Nicole Marshall's halfcourt shot at the second overtime buzzer
just missed.
The Chargers (17-9) edged LSSU 81-79 in double overtime and
advanced to the GLIAC semifinals Saturday at Michigan Tech.
MTU, Ashland and Northwood also moved on to the final
four.
Lake Superior State (16-10) trailed 25-22 at halftime and
trailed by as many as 11 points during the second half. Marshall
scored seven straight points to spark a Laker comback and hit a
three-pointer with four seconds left in regulation to tie it,
62-62.
With starting center Cassy Schemberger on the bench with five
fouls and starting guard Ronlea Peterson out with leg cramps, LSSU
looked to seniors Allison Jaynes and Alyssa Loney for support.
Jaynes, making only her 10th appearance of the season, came in cold
at 2:41 of the first overtime and easily sank two free throws. She
also hit a jumper to tie it, 79-79, with 46 seconds to go.
Senior Emily Joseph made two free throws, and Jaynes made
put-back for a 76-72 lead during the opening minute
of the second overtime. Hillsdale answered with two free
throws and a three-pointer by Marissa DeMott.
Jaynes canned a three-pointer for a 79-77 LSSU lead with 2:48
remaining. Hillsdale converted three of four free-throw attempts on
two possessions during the next 46 seconds. LSSU committed
three turnovers down the stretch, but still had a chance to win it
when Marshall's half-court shot looked to be on the mark. It
bounced off the rim as time expired.
Marshall, who averaged 25.5 points per game during the Lakers'
last two outings, finished with 24 points and six rebounds.
Joseph scored 17 points and had five assists. She was followed
by Peterson with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Maria
Blazejewski scored 10 points, and Jaynes finished with nine.
Lea Jones led Hillsdale with 23 points, eight rebounds, four
assists and five steals. Laura Barczak added 16 points and nine
rebounds. Hillsdale shot 49.1 percent from the field, including
8-of-16 from three-point range, and made 17-of-24 free throws.
LSSU shot 44.6 percent from the field, including 8-of-26 from
behind the arc, and made 13-of-23 free throws. The Lakers
out-rebounded Hillsdale 42-33 and totaled 18 turnovers to the
Chargers' 22.
