Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference defending champion Michigan Tech proved that it doesn't
think much of its No. 2 spot in the North Division women's
basketball standings. The 19th-ranked Huskies got a
career-high 29 points from guard Sam Hoyt and beat Lake Superior
State 83-53 Thursday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
MTU (10-3 overall, 5-2 GLIAC) still trails division leader
Ferris State by a game, but made a strong statement that it plans
to contend for the title. Hoyt was 11-of-16 from the field,
including 7-of-10 from behind the arc. Lindsay Lindstrom added 16
points and six rebounds for the Huskies.
Michigan Tech shot 51.7 percent from the field, including
15-of-25 from three-point range, and made 8-of-11 free throws. MTU
led 30-20 at halftime and shot 66.7 percent from the field
(18-of-27) during the second half.
Sarah Cubr scored a GLIAC season-high 14 points, and Maria
Blazejewski added 11 points and seven rebounds to lead Lake
Superior State (5-9 overall, 1-6 GLIAC). Laura VanEs came off
the bench and scored a career-high eight points. The
Lakers shot 33.3 percent from the field, including 4-of-9 from
three-point range, and made 19-of-28 free throws. They
out-rebounded Michigan Tech, 34-30.
LSSU plays host to Northern Michigan at 1 p.m. Saturday.
