No. 19 MTU gets a career high from Hoyt

Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE - Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference defending champion Michigan Tech proved that it doesn't think much of its No. 2 spot in the North Division women's basketball standings. The 19th-ranked Huskies got a career-high 29 points from guard Sam Hoyt and beat Lake Superior State 83-53 Thursday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

MTU (10-3 overall, 5-2 GLIAC) still trails division leader Ferris State by a game, but made a strong statement that it plans to contend for the title. Hoyt was 11-of-16 from the field, including 7-of-10 from behind the arc. Lindsay Lindstrom added 16 points and six rebounds for the Huskies.

Michigan Tech shot 51.7 percent from the field, including 15-of-25 from three-point range, and made 8-of-11 free throws. MTU led 30-20 at halftime and shot 66.7 percent from the field (18-of-27) during the second half.

Sarah Cubr scored a GLIAC season-high 14 points, and Maria Blazejewski added 11 points and seven rebounds to lead Lake Superior State (5-9 overall, 1-6 GLIAC). Laura VanEs came off the bench and scored a career-high eight points. The Lakers shot 33.3 percent from the field, including 4-of-9 from three-point range, and made 19-of-28 free throws. They out-rebounded Michigan Tech, 34-30.
