Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - With Lake Superior State's post players in
foul trouble throughout Thursday's men's basketball game against
Ohio Dominican, LSSU's guards came through in the scoring column to
lead the Lakers to a 71-66 win at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
Sophomore guard Derek Billing was 7-of-8 from behind the arc and
scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Lakers (9-9 overall, 4-7
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). Billing scored 20
second-half points, making four three-pointers and five
straight shots during a three-minute stretch early in the
second half.
LSSU led 34-23 at halftime and maintained a double-digit lead
through the 10-minute mark of the second half. Ohio Dominican (3-15
overall, 0-12 GLIAC) clawed within reach thanks
to numerous trips to the free-throw line, but failed to
capitalize. The Panthers were 12-of-24 at the free-throw line
during the second half and 16-of-30 for the game. Despite their
shooting woes, they cut the lead to three points, 64-61, with 1:32
remaining.
Senior guard Kyle Hunt was 3-for-3 from three-point range
and finished with 13 points. He also tied his
career high in assists with eight.
Junior Derek Kinney and sophomore Cameron Metz combined to total
17 points and 17 rebounds despite struggling with foul trouble
throughout the game.
LSSU shot 49 percent from the field, including 11-of-16 from
three-point range, and made 12-of-17 free throws. the Lakers
out-rebounded ODU, 33-31.
Morgan Jones scored 19 points, and Jake Mochoskay totaled 16
points and eight rebounds to lead the Panthers, who landed four
scorers in double figures. ODU shot 44.7 percent from the field,
including 8-of-15 from three-point range.
LSSU celebrates Alumni Weekend when it plays host to Tiffin at 3
p.m. Saturday.
