Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State combined a hot second
half with one of its best defensive efforts of the season to knock
off Tiffin, 71-67, during Saturday's women's basketball game at Bud
Cooper Gymnasium.
LSSU (7-12 overall, 3-9 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference) was 15-of-24 from the field during the second half to
overtake Tiffin (15-5 overall, 10-4 GLIAC), which led 28-27 during
a closely-contested first half.
While the veteran trio of Maria Blazejewski with 23 points,
Cassy Schemberger with 14 points and Sarah Cubr with 10 points led
the Lakers, LSSU turned in one of its most-balanced scoring
efforts of the season. Guards Raven Trammell and Jasmine Brown
combined to make 4-of-6 three-point attempts and score 17
points.
Trammell canned a three-pointer with 2:41 remaining to tie it,
65-65. Neither team scored again until Tiffin's Mandy Jaeb made two
free throws with 51 seconds remaining.
Blazejewski, who was 3-of-5 from behind the arc, hit a
three-pointer for a 68-67 LSSU lead with 32 seconds to go.
Schemberger was fouled after a defensive rebound and made both free
throws to extend the lead to 70-67, and Taylor Greene added a free
throw with one second to go.
LSSU shot 53.1 percent from the field, making 9-of-15 free
throws. The Lakers were 10-of-15 at the free-throw line. They hit
season highs in field-goal percentage and three-point field-goal
percentage.
Blazejewski led LSSU in rebounds with eight, plus had five
assists and seven blocked shots. Trammell also totaled five
assists.
Jaeb scored 21 points to lead Tiffin, which shot 28 percent from
the field on its way to ending a four-game win streak. The Dragons
were 7-of-24 from three-point range and 14-of-17 at the free-throw
line. Jessica Harris totaled 17 points and 11 rebounds, and
Amanda Baute had 10 rebounds as TU dominated the boards,
50-37.
LSSU travels to Ferris State on Feb. 2.
